HAZEL STICK: EARLUNA

When the little friend Crumb was taken, Hazel sets off to search the world for them.
[ A (NOT SO) SHORT, SIMPLE TURN-BASED RPG ]
- HAZEL STICK has a top-down pixel tile style and there are no action elements. It takes roughly 2 hours reach the initial credits.
- Enemies on the map move when you do and a battle begins when you touch one. Then, you take turns attacking and casting spells to win a battle and get stronger.
- [NEW] Experience an entire second world map after the credits! It takes about 6 hours to discover everything...
[ FIND STICKS TO GAIN THEIR POWER ]
- Spread all over the world are 100 Sticks in all shapes and sizes to find hidden in corners, caves or even guarded by tough Bosses.
- Equip a Stick outside or in battle to use its effects such as raising stats, improving certain spells or even granting special passive abilities.
- Reveal the location of new Sticks on the map by defeating the rare Beasts that wield them.
- [NEW] Equip two of many new and old Sticks at once for endless strategic possibilities!
[ LEARN SPELLS BY DEFEATING BEASTS ]
- Each of the 100 types of Beasts know some of 30 types of Spells that you have a chance to learn if you defeat them.
- Seek out Beasts to learn their Spells to expand your options in battle and exploit the weaknesses of other Beasts via elemental damage, stat changes, and other effects.
- Beasts you've defeated before can be Befriended and follow you around. This changes your base stats to theirs, allowing for an extra layer of strategy.
- [NEW] Learn some more Spells with rather unique effects from one of the many new types of Beasts!
[ WALK ANYWHERE, ANYTIME ]
- While there is a clear order of regions to visit in this world, you don't always have to follow the path.
- Reach dangerous places earlier than you should, or Mosey back to them later when you're strong enough.
- Replay the game to try different paths and access different combinations of Sticks, Spells and Friends.
- [NEW] The second world map is more open for exploration and has even more reasons to revisit previous areas!
[ OPTIONAL OPTIONS ]
- You can adjust Sounds and Visuals, but also Gameplay settings such as Infinite HP, Manual Encounters or even Fixed Level, so you can play the game however you want, whenever you want.
- Finish the entire game to start New Game+, ramping up enemy Levels, or press [W]/(Select) on the title screen for Wither Mode, a comically unforgiving challenge I made as a joke.
- [NEW] Additional Options let you see a Map of underground areas and not see spider-like Beasts.
HAZEL STICK was made in about half a year using GameMaker Studio 2.
Initially released in 2022 and last updated in 2024.
With support from "CH-3.rry", "saph" and "Tippi".
The sequel to Isle Solate, an RPG Maker MV game I made in 2020.

Install instructions
Unzip the file and run "HAZEL STICK.exe" in the folder.
(This game might also work on mac or linux but I'm not sure)
(If on Version 1.3 or later and the screen is too big you can press [F11] to toggle to a smaller screen size)

Just finished up the 2.0 update, and of course I love it. This time around I allowed myself to tinker around a little bit with the options, as I was feeling a little overlevelled by the 2/3rds mark of the first world so I tuned my EXP down to 50%. I then had to turn it back up about 1/3 of the way into the expac lmao. 30/30 spells, 100/100 beasts and sticks, and every sign. Still not sure what tip#62 "a divine power" is referring to, but carrot+bat is enough god power for me for now. I'll have to come back to this again some time, thank you~!
... oh also uhm physical immunity prevents Beasts from gaining mana from attacks. Decided to honor system that one out 'cuz it was kinda silly

Not all Stick combinations were created equal and breaking the game is intentional. :)
Excellent stuff! Love the use of one toolkit of spells to sort of paint a palette of creatures that have a distinct sorta... idunno, texture to them? I kind of love it when RPGs are built out with an obvious pile of blocks like that. And then you get to play with the blocks! What could be better, really.
For anyone else reading: took me just a few hours to beat, involves a lotta sniffing around to find the last few sticks but if you run dry on immediate leads you get a lot of good options to find guidance. The battle formulas are super straightforward and easy to understand if you look close, and there's a few interesting consequences of how spells and stats are set up!
