HAZEL STICK Version 1.4 (22-9-23) is out!


This update has minor gameplay changes but there's big improvements on visuals and sound. Should be the last update for a good while.

[ NEW FEATURES ]

  • ANIMATED BEASTS: Every single beast has expanded animation
    • Just like Hazel in v1.3, each beast now has two "action" frames and one "hurt" frame.
    • Some Beasts have a new walk frame as their old one is now an action frame.
    • Existing frames for a couple Beasts have been revised slightly.
    • (Also fixed Crumb's animation not working because I accidentally deleted it somehow)
  • EXTENDED MUSIC: Every single song is now twice as long
    • I realized real music has repetition so every "segment" of HAZEL STICK music is now repeated once
    • Complex melodies were simplified as the simpler ones like KIBIKI work better with the dynamic battle mix. (also because listening to HAZELNUS every time I tested the game was doing my head in)
    • The theme of the secret boss also sounds a bit different now.
    • (Thus, the filesize is larger now)
  • DAPPER BEASTS: Extremely rare Beast variants
    • Every Beast has a 1 in 1000* chance of being Dapper and being a different colour.
    • They come in 256 random colours, meaning there's a total of 13568 unique Dapper Beasts. (yes, even Bosses can be Dapper!)
    • Defeating a Dapper Beast gives x10 EXP and can then be Befriended. (until you defeat a different Dapper of the same Beast)
    • (*1 in 500 chance if using Stick #34)

[ OTHER CHANGES ]
  • Edits to the world:
    • Fixed Beasts spawning in walls. (Now that Dapper Beasts exist and could get stuck in corners I finally figured out how to fix this.)
    • Hazel is now guaranteed to learn Spicy if at LV 2 or above. (fixes RNG issues with the tutorial)
    • Moved Tip #42 to an unused hiding spot in the same region.
    • Fixed Tip #14's text overflowing. (I forgot to check it after I added controller prompts)
    • Fixed grammar on Tip #48.
    • Renamed a secret area to actually fit in the box.
    • Beast #37 now appears instead of Beast #32 in Evening Wood.
    • Revised the "mud" tile so it loops better. (mud appears in ANDERSAN)
  • Edits to menus and UI:
    • Revised some of the icons in the Options Menu. (to make them easier to see)
    • Changing Options is now half as loud. (It was very loud sorry about that)
    • Changed the name of Stick #32.
    • Edited Bestiary entries #4 and #38.
    • Fixed Bestiary icon #53 being misaligned.
    • The Save Menu now shows each file's current Friend. (another way to tell files apart)
    • HP numbers have been moved right a bit. (so that endgame Boss HP now fits in the box)
  • Miscellaneous edits:
    • Changed "Bappy" in the credits to "Bappy Dappy" and added a DAPPY.
    • This game is now "made in 2022-2023" instead of just 2022 (given all these updates I've released)
    • Removed 1 and added 23 lines that can show after losing Wither Mode.
    • Fixed Beast #17 casting Wimpy instead of Dummy
    • Fixed Beast #34 holding Stick #6 instead of Stick #7 (they look similar so I never noticed since v1.0)
    • The sound effect for defeating a Boss now plays for any Beast that gives at least x10 EXP (such as DAPPY)
    • (Also have made little adjustments to the itch.io page over time)

(Older versions are still available to install as many times as you'd like.)
