HAZEL STICK: EARLUNA is out!
HAZEL STICK: EARLUNA » Devlog
Yep, Version 2.0 is so big that it gets its own subtitle! (and despite delays it still released before that other subtitled indie followup)
[ MAJOR FEATURES ]
- A Second World Map!
- The world of HAZEL STICK is actually two worlds now! (after the initial credits)
- Another nine regions to explore with loads of new tile designs. (one even has a unique effect)
- Caves here are larger and some even have multiple exits.
- It's not completely linear this time. (It's more like two lines now)
- 47 New Beasts!
- This new world is home to plenty of new Beasts to fight.
- Almost all of them have unique stats to Befriend
- Many of the new Beasts are (optional) Bosses.
- Plenty of existing Beasts will also be present in these new areas.
- 4 New Spells!
- Featuring a (sort of) new element: LIGHT!
- Some new Beasts resist or are weak to LIGHT.
- Fight new Beasts to learn these new Spells.
- Yep, only 4 new ones, definitely no more :)
- 48 New Sticks!
- Those Beasts wield tons of new Sticks to find and use.
- These Sticks affect MP costs, damage taken, Critical hits and more!
- Only a few of them make a Spell 40% better.
- New Sticks don't affect progress towards Stick #49. (neither do some other Sticks now)
- Dual-Wielding Sticks!
- Hazel can now use two different Sticks at the same time!
- Press [Z]/(X) on the Stick Menu to equip a second Stick.
- So many Sticks in either hand leads to endless strategies...
- Beasts also occasionally have two Sticks (but only reveal their own on the map)
- 40 New Signs...And An Actual Plot!
- Only 10 of the new signs are Tips for new features.
- The rest are ~Lore~ about the origin of Hazel and others...
- Discover the story of HAZEL STICK, one sign at a time.
- Isle Solate is canon.
- A Balanced SPEED stat!
- Base stats and Spells affect SPD less.
- The stat itself matters more, however. (LV differences also matter more as a result)
- Point is, casting Binky no longer breaks the game (as quickly)
- 3 New Options!
- Toggle between the new and old SPD system (to break the game like old times.)
- Toggle Underground Maps if you get lost in the new caves (contains spoilers but I wanted to add this anyway)
- Toggle if three certain Beasts look like spiders or not (it was easy to implement so i figured why not)
- Not-So New Music!
- It's just remixes of all the old music for new areas. (different tempo and different instruments)
- There is one brand new melody though. (a certain Boss now has actual music)
- The filesize has increased by 14 MB. (it's like 90% sound files at this point)
[ MINOR FEATURES ]
- Changes to the world:
- Text box for signs is now longer, allowing for many signs to be rewritten.
- Beast #12 now appears in Garden of Mould (it didn't before?)
- Sticks with field effects now stack. (caves will never be dark again)
- Stick #34 quadruples the chance that Beasts have two Sticks. (who give x2.25 EXP, by the way)
- Stick #34 now affects spawn rate in Hideout of Hats. (there's a new Stick with the same effects as #34. they stack.)
- Sticks bob with walking frames now. (so that holding two Sticks looks better)
- Swapping your second Stick prevents the Wait function for 20 frames. (to prevent accidents)
- Beast-only field effects of Sticks #47 and #48 apply to any Beast with them (hearts and souls for everyone)
- Updated Stick #52's design (to match updated source material)
- Fixed Crumb briefly disappearing in the ending cutscene (hugs for crumb)
- The results screen now knows of one additional Stick and Beast in the base game. (it's sharken)
- Beast #53 now has a Stick. (but the stick is elsewhere)
Changes to menus:
- Several menus can now scroll up and down to fit all the new content. (no more need for extra buttons!)
- Changed the design of the Options Menu to fit the new options. (first ever sideways text)
- Infinite HP can now be set to never fill HP. (like wither mode but without the permadeath)
- Infinite MP can now be set to fill MP after battles. (like how HP normally works)
Controllers have new menu hotkeys: (L) Options / (R) Bestiary / (Select) Map
- Items below #10 now have a 0 before the number. (#5 -> #05)
- Several Sticks have changed descriptions. (compare with old versions for details)
- Several Beasts have changed descriptions. (tfw your childhood series returns and sucks)
- The Bestiary now shows yellow names for Dapper Beasts. (just like in battles)
- Fixed Options in the Title Menu affecting Wither Mode. (no more wither mode easy mode)
- Position and zoom of the Map cursor is now Saved. (and also resets with New Game+)
- Toggling Map icons now plays a sound (btw, new menu hotkeys don't work when Map is open)
- The Title Menu now features two Sticks and new backgrounds (and a new title!)
- Playtime on Save files is now in grey text. (easier to look at saves now)
- Fixed being able to not Save after the Credits. (i insist you save your game)
- Opening the Map via [M]/(Select) no longer moves the cursor to Hazel. (intentional game design)
- Changes to battles:
- HP now also shows as yellow if exactly 1/3 of MAX (this is important for a new Stick)
- Fixed surviving fatal "per turn" damage by fleeing and mashing the button. (yea it's another battle exploit nobody found)
- Fixed Stick #51 causing Swap to get the wrong Stick. (certified spaghetti code)
- Added and changed a lot of Wither quotes so that there are 169 now. (nice)
- Fixed the turn order being incorrect about Binky's effects. (it's still a bit iffy but close enough)
- Stick #40's effectiveness against Beast #50 has been improved. (all new hard counter)
- You can now unequip your Stick. (stickless run when)
- Sticks #45, 46, 50 and 51 are all now 20% weaker. (first ever Stick nerfs)
- Resistances and Weakness now stack. Linearly. (Sticks no longer replace resistances of Beasts)
- Hearty and Remedy are now affected by resistance and weakness. (the not-so new element)
- Spell Menu is now longer to fit new Spells (yep, all four of them c:)
- Sticks #10, 41 and 42 have a new effect if you equip multiple of them. (always win weapon triangle)
- Attack element Sticks have a new effect if you equip multiple of them. (since they aren't compatible otherwise)
- Fixed the Boss KO sound not including beating a x10 EXP Beast via "per turn" damage. (updating is hard)
- Changes to the itch.io page:
- Replaced the video and screenshots to match the latest version. (i had to play my own game yet again)
- Added new paragraphs for brand new features. (dual stick and map 2)
- Changed the banner at the top. (its earluna time baybee)
- Changed the background image and cover image. (needs more sticks)
- Changed the title of the game. (subtitles are cool)
(Older versions are still available for download, so that you can witness what my game was like a year or two ago.)
